Car Seats, Sea to Sky Leadership Cohort VII Graduation & Trevor Linden

After 8 months of involvement as a participant in the 2011 Sea to Sky Leadership Cohort VII our final project and graduation took place this past weekend - Saturday June 18, 2011.

Our final project was a free car seat safety check for children’s car seats. Previous car seat inspections in the Sea to Sky Corridor have found a 92% failure rate. Canada wide the failure rate is approximately 75%. This includes expired seats, inappropriately sized seats, and seat that were not properly installed. If you want to have your child’s car seat checked by a professional feel free to contact me and I can put you in touch with a qualified car seat specialist.

The project participants, including myself, held 4 clinics - Mt. Currie, Pemberton, Whistler and Squamish. It was an overwhelming success. A big thank you goes out to Squamish Fire Rescue for giving tours of the fire truck to children throughout the day and to Trevor Linden (yes, that Trevor Linden) who not only was the guest speaker for our graduation ceremony but also came out to help promote the event.

WHO: Mountain Orthodontics

WHAT: Open House with Free Exam & Prizes

WHEN: Friday, June 17

TIME: 2:00PM to 6:00PM
WHERE: The Mountain Orthotics new office is located beside London
Drugs and above Samurai Sushi on the 2nd floor in the Garibaldi Village.

A good friend of mine is an amazing Orthodontist in town - Dr. Gina Ball of Mountain Orthodontics. She is holding an Open House today, Friday June 17, where you can bring your children for a Free Exam. Her new office is located beside London Drugs and above Samurai Sushi on the 2nd floor.

There will also be a chance to win prizes, grab goody bags for everyone and, of course, enjoy a snack. I can tell you from experience that she is fantastic. I am a patient :) I have Lingual Braces (braces on the backside of my teeth.)

It's recommended that children be seen by an orthodontist by the age of 7.  At this age the adult teeth are beginning to erupt and future problems can be identified and, if necessary, treated to prevent more complicated problems from developing.

FREE DRAWS

  1. Oral B electric toothbrush
  2. Records appointment - $450 value.  For those that could benefit from braces they can enter the draw which includes the models, photos, and x-rays required to develop the  treatment plan.  It also includes the consultation to discuss the problems and the treatment plan!

2010 REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive - November 29 - December 6

Blanket Drive Gears Up for Cold, Wet Winter

November 2010 - With predictions for this winter to be the coldest and wettest in 50 years, and the number of homeless people on the rise in the Lower Mainland, the need for the annual REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive could be at its highest in its 16-year history.

The REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive runs November 29 to December 6 at over 100 real estate offices across the region, collecting blankets, bedding and warm and waterproof clothing for the homeless and working poor. Over 30 charities from Whistler to Chilliwack receive, on average, more than 4,000 bags of gently-used or new items donated by REALTORS®, their clients and the public.

Earlier this year, the City of Vancouver announced that the homeless count in Vancouver has increased 12 per cent since 2008. Also, meteorologists are calling for a La Niña weather cycle this winter, meaning colder-than-normal temperatures and heavier precipitation.

Donations to the REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive stay within the communities in which they are donated, or if the volumes are too large, go to charities in greatest need in neighbouring communities.

DONATION PICK UP: If you want to donate please feel free to contact me and I will personally come to your home and pick up your donations for you!

The REALTORS Care® Blanket Drive Story

Way back in 1995, some caring REALTORS® in Vancouver observed the homeless situation in the city’s eastside and said to themselves, we’ve got to do something.

They put out an appeal to their fellow colleagues for warm blankets and coats and collected 600 bags of donations specifically dedicated to Vancouver’s homeless in the downtown core.

That single act of kindness has blossomed into one of the largest annual collections of warm clothing and blankets, helping homeless people and the working poor in every single community in the Lower Mainland.

Fifteen years later, thousands of REALTORS® from Whistler to Chilliwack have collected more than 27,000 bags of donations. Each year, more than 75 amazingly dedicated members actually pick-up and deliver all the donations, and well over 100 real estate offices in the Lower Mainland act as collection depots.

The annual REALTORS Care® Drive now collects an astonishing 4,000 plus bags of warm, winter items on behalf of dozens of local charities.

Update On Last Night's Squamish Oceanfront Meeting

Hello,

I would like to send out a BIG thank you to all of you who came out to the Oceanfront Development Meeting last night! It was an incredible show of community members....probably the best turn out I have seen yet.

To recap for those of you who were there, and to bring those that weren't up to speed, this was the last public meeting before the Mayor and Council vote next week on the First and Second Reading for the Oceanfront Development. If the Mayor and Council vote to move the process forward, and from what I gather, the public support and the overall feeling is that this First and Second Reading will pass....then, there will be one more and FINAL meeting. This meeting is scheduled to take place at the end of November - tentatively, November 29th. This would be the absolutely last meeting which would be held prior to the Third Reading for the Oceanfront Development. At which point, if the Third Reading passes the Oceanfront Development gets the go ahead. Very exciting! This means that as early as this coming Spring/Summer we could see some digging happening on the Oceanfront to begin the first phase...the Park.

If you have not seen the 9 minute video that shows the vision of the Oceanfront Development then you should check it out. There was a second video shown last night which is a 3 minute video. I believe it will be loaded on the SODC website sometime very soon. You can visit both of these videos and learn more about the process and such at www.squamishoceanfront.com

There were some great comments and great questions last night. Thanks again to everyone that came out!

Regards,

Jasmine

Squamish Oceanfront Sub-Area Plan Open House. Thursday October 28, 2010

Hello Everyone,

There has been a lot of talk and questions over the past few months about 'What is happening with the Squamish Oceanfront Development?' Fortunately, there is a public meeting being held this week that you can attend to learn more about the proposed plan and how it is coming along. Time is running out - If you have not been to one of the Oceanfront Development meetings then you should probably make it out to this one. From what I understand, this is the last 'public' meeting that will take place. There will be an opportunity for you to listen to what the SODC (Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation) has to say, take a look at some pictures/drawings and then there will be time for an open mic should you want to comment.

What: Squamish Oceanfront Sub Area Plan Open House
When: October 28th, 2010 from 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Where: Sea to Sky Hotel
Note: Presentation at 7:00pm with an open mic to follow

2010 RBC GranFondo Whistler Saturday September 11

A truly incredible bike race will be zooming through Squamish on Saturday September 11. The RBC GranFondo Whistler Bike Race will be taking place North on the Sea To Sky from Vancouver to Whistler. I urge everyone to come out, stand by the roadside and cheer on the thousands of competitors!!! See you out there...

The Start line

Starting at sea level in Vancouver, riders will head over the Lions Gate Bridge in a dedicated lane on their way up to Whistler. Once over the bridge, riders will travel up Taylor Way to get onto the upper levels Trans Canada Hwy with a right of way at all intersections. The journey then begins.

The Journey

Riders will travel the rest of the route in a dedicated lane all the way up to Whistler. You'll be distracted from the 2,400 meters in climbing by the spectacular views of Howe Sound as you ride to Squamish - the half way mark and rest stop. You may be surprised to realize you'll also enjoy 1,750 meters of descent as you roll through the Coast Mountain Range for a net gain of 650 meters elevation to arrive at the finish line in the heart of Whistler Village.

The Route

The newly upgraded Sea to Sky Highway was designed to accommodate traffic for the 2010 Winter Olympics… but it's been waiting for you. You won't believe your eyes as you travel this spectacular route.

The Finish

Riders will finish in Whistler Village with a celebration worthy of this epic ride including live music, a beer garden, massage tents, a rider expo in the plaza and all your friends and family. Your personal luggage from the start will be available for pick up plus a complimentary bike check as you enjoy the festivities.

About

Gran Fondo's are mass participation cycling events that have enjoyed incredible popularity in Europe for decades, and are beginning to gain momentum in North America. The RBC GranFondo Whistler will be the first world-class Gran Fondo in Canada in 2010 (but followed by more in 2011).

Loosely translated from Italian, GranFondo means "big ride." Rides are often 100 km or more for a large number of cyclists at a variety of skill levels - everyone from the competitive cyclist to the amateur wanting to challenge themselves over distance and time enjoy these events. While these are not races, top finishers are often recognized.

Gran Fondo's are judged by the challenges they offer steep climbs, long distances and a combination of the two. The RBC GranFondo Whistler will not disappoint with 2,400 meters of climbing over the entire route. And if that isn't enough, the RBC GranFondo Whistler will also offer primes (or mini timed races) along the way at particularly challenging sections to give riders that extra motivational boost. This will be a challenge worth bragging about and you'll be rewarded with a Founding Riders Finisher's Medal.

All Abilities Are Welcome

The Gran Fondo is the full distance of the ride designed to challenge endurance. Many Gran Fondo events offer a "mini" or "medium" version called the "Medio".  This is appropriate for those not quite ready for the full distance but who still want to participate in the challenge. The Medio in the RBC GranFondo Whistler will start in Squamish to cover a distance of 60 km, but will still be a challenge by including the steepest of the climbs up to Whistler. A "Giro" is a common cycling term for race. The Giro division in the RBC GranFondo Whistler will be the race component. Open to licensed riders in Categories 1 through 3, the Giro will be an all out race to the top of Whistler at an anticipated average speed of over 30 km/hour.

Participation in RBC GranFondo Whistler this year is limited to 4,000 riders.

Mortgage Insurance Rules Announcement

Mortgage Insurance Rules Announcement

This morning, Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced prudent changes to mortgage insurance rules intended to come into force on April 19, 2010.

  • All borrowers must meet the standards for a 5 year fixed rate mortgage even if they choose a mortgage with a lower interest rate and shorter term

This initiative is meant to help Canadians prepare for higher interest rates in the future.

  • The maximum amount one can withdraw in refinancing their mortgage will be reduced to 90% from the current 95% of the value of one's home.
This will help ensure home ownership is a more effective way to save.

  • Non-owner occupied properties will require a minimum down payment of 20%.
This is meant for homes which would be purchased as investment properties, speculative properties, and so on.

At this time, the Federal Finance Minister has not recommended changes to down payment requirements or length of amortizations for owner-occupied residences.
